How Often Should You Groom Your Pet?

Do you know how often you should groom your pet?

The coat of hair of an animal offers protection against cold and the heat of the sun. It isn’t necessary to groom all pets entirely, especially if they have rosy skin and little hair. Doing so will take away their protective layer and expose them to things like sunburns and skin rashes.

The method and time between grooming sessions may differ depending on your pet. Here are a few tips:

  • Brushing your pet should be done at least once a week. In the case of cats, doing it on a daily basis will help to prevent or minimize the formation of fur balls.
  • After grooming your pet, it is important to keep brushing its coat over time, this will help to separate the dead hair from the new one as it grows.
  • Dogs shouldn’t go without a bath for more than two months, while cats don’t require regular bathing, only when they are extremely dirty.
  • Your pet’s ears should be checked at once or twice a month and gently cleaned with a damp (not wet) cotton ball.
  • It is recommended to get a professional to cut your pet’s nails, in order to prevent cutting too short, which can be painful for your pet.

If your dog has stiff hair (German Shepherd, Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Belgian Shepherd, etc), or is a breed with a lot of hair (Chow-Chow, Pomeranian, Collie, Spitz, etc), it would be best to take him/her to the groomer to have all the shedding hair effectively removed.

For dogs that normally have their hair trimmed all year round (cocker, schnauzer, pigeon, fox terrier, airedale, yorkshire, etc), it is important to keep brushing, trimming, and maintaining proper hygiene to avoid knots from forming.

Ungroomed pets are prone to have parasites and fur balls which pull on skin. It is recommended to explore your pet’s skin regularly to find existing issues before it turns into a bigger problem.
